Common misconceptions surrounding automation
AI

In this blog, we talk to Matt Shacklock, our Automation Sales Manager about some of the misconceptions surrounding the automation of materials handling.

Automation takes a long time to implement, doesn’t it?

As with any project, the larger it is, the longer it takes! A simple, push button-controlled system can be implemented within a couple of weeks. We currently have a number of our L-MATIC counterbalance stackers and AMR’s in stock for quick delivery and implementation!

It’s got to be really expensive and only for big companies to make it worth it, right?

Again, it really depends on the size of the overall system. Yes, automated trucks are more expensive than manual trucks, but not to the point where they are unsuitable for small/medium sized operations. All our automated vehicles can be rented though the support of our in-house finance company, and if we consider the savings in labour costs, companies may find they are not expending any more capital.

Don’t you have to have a big fleet to make automation worthwhile?

Absolutely not. All our systems are scalable, we can and have implemented one truck systems. Many companies phase automation and focus on one flow to start with and widen the scope once the system is live and showing a benefit.

Surely, it’s really complicated to fit automated trucks into an existing Warehouse Management System?

Our automated trucks come with standard plug-ins, compatible with most WMS systems. Our software team can work with you to ensure a seamless integration into your system using a standard plug-in, or middleware.

Automated trucks have limited lift heights.

Our automated range includes pallet stackers, reach trucks and even Very Narrow Aisle trucks which have lift heights up to 16 metres, just like a manual truck!

What if I need something smaller than a fork truck?

In addition to our automated truck range, we also have two AMR (Automated Mobile Robot) solutions which are ideal for operations with limited space.

What if automation changes my current warehouse layout and affects other parts of my operation?

We can help you with a complete solution, which could include anything from warehouse design, storage solutions, conveyor systems and even other automated solutions, such as wrapping systems to provide you with a complete bespoke solution. We don’t just do trucks!

But how do I know if automation is right for me?

There may be many and varied reasons why you may be thinking about automation, whether it be a tight labour market, safety concerns or the want to remove manual non-value adding tasks, our team of automation specialists can work with you to see if an automated solution is the right choice for you. You could even take a quick survey here to see if automation is the right fit for your business.

Say if I’ve still no idea where to start?
