Test drive gets the seal of Linde Approved

Alec Tiranti Ltd is a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of Sculptors' Tools, Materials and Studio Equipment for Carving, Modelling, Mouldmaking, Casting and Restoration.

Based in Thatcham, Berkshire, the company supply a wide range of materials, equipment and tools to the art industry and universities in London. The site also includes a shop selling art materials to the general public.

When the time came to purchase a fork truck to unload pallets of raw materials, John Grimshaw at Tiranti turned to Linde Material Handling as he had experienced Linde products in the past.

A low utilisation application such as this did not warrant the purchase of a new truck, so Used Truck Sales Manager, Paul Deller from Linde South East recommended a Linde Approved truck which suited John’s budget perfectly.

“I was looking for a high quality truck that wouldn’t cost the earth” John commented. A ‘Test Drive’ demo of a Linde Approved Used truck at the Tiranti site secured John’s decision to purchase not one, but two Linde Approved trucks, a reach truck and a powered pallet truck.

John concluded, “Backed up by Linde with a support centre just round the corner made Linde Approved the obvious choice for me.”

Linde Approved Used trucks offer an excellent cost effective alternative to the investment in a new model. Typically ex-contract hire, all Linde Approved trucks have been maintained from new by Linde’s national network companies and their 23 fully equipped support centres nationwide. Linde Approved trucks are prepared to three levels which are designed to suit individual budgets and applications. Only genuine Linde parts are fitted during the refurbishment process and LOLER/PUWER certification is provided with every machine.

Stand by. Linde Approved on board!

Standby Power Ltd is a small company based in Ashford, Middlesex specialising in uninterruptable portable power supplies across the region to industries including Petrochemical, Offshore, Special Events/Entertainment, Hospitals and Construction.

Moving and positioning high value goods such as these requires reliable, manoeuvrable equipment. In the past, forklifts were hired as and when required and delivered directly to the site in which they were needed.

As the business grew, it became apparent that a more permanent solution was needed. So Bob Bendle, Director of Standby Power, turned to Linde Approved.

“Upon visiting the Linde Approved workshop, my doubts on buying an Approved truck were alleviated as soon as I saw the refurbishment process. The vast array of trucks available refurbished to such a high standard was impressive.”

Bob took up the offer of a Linde Approved ‘Test Drive’ at his site which secured his decision to purchase not one, but two trucks.

Now rather than hiring trucks to site, they can be loaded onto the lorry and taken with them. The manoeuvrability and compactness of the E 12 electric counterbalance truck enables the lorry to be loaded not only with the generators, but the truck too, meaning that once on site, the lorry can be unloaded immediately and loads positioned without waiting for third party assistance.

Since his purchase, the electric counterbalance and pallet truck have subsequently been joined by the latest purchase of a Linde Approved pallet stacker.

“If we ever need another truck” concluded Bob, “our first port of call will be Linde Approved. I have already recommended Linde Approved to friends requiring this type of equipment.”

“Linde Approved has helped my business greatly.”

Open day success for Used truck centre

Two years after first introducing the dedicated used truck refurbishment centre to the public, Linde Jewsbury’s, based in Castleford has seen over 140 visitors through the doors of their 4000 square metre facilities.

The centre was designed to improve customer access to the wide range of Linde Approved used forklifts. The facility consists of dedicated used truck showrooms, workshops and a wide range of Linde Approved equipment ready to go, available for next day delivery.

Over the past two years the centre has hosted a number of open days which provide a relaxed environment for customers to discuss their material handling needs and view the extensive range of Linde Approved, ex-demonstration and new forklifts.

The most recent of these events resulted in sales of 6 used trucks with many customers taking the opportunity to have a tour of the workshops and sales and service administration areas. During these events, staff are always on hand to answer any questions from how a truck is prepared to the after sales packages and short term rental options available to provide continuous support during the life of the product.

Kerry Payne, Commercial Manager at Linde Jewsbury’s commented, “The centre was opened to meet the growing demand for quality used equipment and to enable customers to “touch the metal”. Having these type of events gives our customers the opportunity to see the Approved refurbishment process first hand and also view the vast selection of models we have available.”

Linde Approved build on customer values

Since their formation in 1967, the ongoing objective of John A Stephens, the largest independent builders merchants in Nottingham, has been to provide customers with a service that is second to none.

This mindset is one shared by Linde Material Handling Jewsbury’s Barry Naylor, who, over the past 3 years has been closely working with Andrew Stephens at John A Stephens, to deliver an ongoing solution to deliver to their materials handling needs.

Operating a mixed materials handling fleet of over 40 trucks for their busy application, Andrew has experienced five brands of equipment and believes that the purchase of a quality product, not necessarily the cheapest, pays dividends in the future.

Andrew commented, “Linde stands for quality, I use a Linde truck every morning and can see the benefits, comfort, visibility, controls, they are a pleasure to use. In addition, the fuel efficiency makes a huge difference.”

The Linde 2.5 tonne, diesel powered counterbalance trucks are fast and reliable. The hydrostatic transmission fitted to these machines has proved ideal in coping with the continuous shunting duties associated with this type of application.

More recently, Andrew has complimented his fleet with the addition of three Linde Approved used trucks, specifically for light operations and in the dusty environment of the bagging area.

Typically ex-rental, all Linde Approved trucks have been maintained from new to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Offering three classes of refurbishment, Linde Approved trucks are designed to suit individual budgets and applications. Only genuine Linde parts are fitted during the refurbishment process and LOLER/PUWER certification is provided with every machine.

“We believe we offer the most cost-effective solution to customers where a Used truck is right for their application and use,” explains Matt Dearman, Used Equipment Manager for Linde Material Handling (UK). “Our engineers are factory trained and the products have been maintained to the highest standards throughout the term of the lease, so our used trucks are highly reliable.”

Andrew Stephens concluded; “I am extremely impressed with the quality and condition of the Approved trucks we have purchased from Linde. We had an urgent requirement due to failures of aging equipment and Linde Jewsbury’s had equipment ready and available for sale with delivery arranged within 2 days. The first Linde truck we purchased in 2012 has operated over 3000 hours and is still working on the original set of tyres and with added fuel savings, Linde is now our preferred supplier”

Linde Jewsbury's is the accredited national network company for Linde covering Bradford, Derby, Huddersfield, Halifax, Leeds, Nottingham, Sheffield and Wakefield. Linde national network companies aim to provide long-term local business partnerships based on a thorough understanding and genuine interest in our customers' individual business requirements as well as delivering responsive and effective after-sales support.

Safari Park go wild for Linde Approved truck

Blair Drummund Safari and Adventure Park is quoted to be the wildest day out in Scotland with everything from the Wild Animal Reserve, Sea Lion shows to Pedal Boats and bug land walks.

Since opening in 1970, the park, which is the only Safari Park in Scotland, has proved extremely sucessful with approximately 400,000 visitors a year. A result of this success has led the safari park to purchase an Approved Linde Used fork lift truck to assist with loading and unloading of food and drink for their cafe.

The H 25 T gas powered counterbalance truck is used primarily for lorry loading and unloading, but since delivery, has also been used for various applications across the whole site.

Scott Meiklejohn at Blair Drummond Safari Park commented, “We chose a Linde truck because we were looking for a reliable, well maintained truck that had a good service history. Having looked on various internet sites we asked our main food supplier 3663 for advice and they recommended we contact Linde. After a couple of phone calls the Area Sales Manager came to the park and discussed our needs and budget. The main attraction to buying Linde was not only a strong recommendation but the assurance that Linde has a good after sales service to ensure the truck has as short a down time as possible if there were any problems, to which, to date, there have been none. I believe we made the right choice in buying a Linde Approved Used Truck.”

Matt Dearman, Used Equipment Manager from Linde Material Handling (UK) gives advice on what to look out for when purchasing used forklifts on line

“As with any purchase over the internet, caution must be taken, however a piece of equipment such as a forklift truck adds in further complications and considerations. There are certain critical criteria that should be taken into account to prevent a costly mistake or potentially more serious consequences”

First, what make of truck should I look at?
“Not all forklift trucks are equal as some will naturally age better than others. Choose a well known reliable brand that has a reputation for longevity and reliability.

“Opting for a reliable manufacturer improves the resale value of the unit and you can expect these trucks to have far fewer and less costly problems during ownership of the truck. Selecting the right local service provider is just as important as the truck itself, you need a reliable partner that can service, repair and obtain spare parts quickly and easily. Therefore you should ensure that the supplier is easy to contact and that they have local coverage in your area.

What truck do I need for my application?
For this, you may need some help. The best approach is to consult the manufacturer, who will advise you of which truck, capacity, mast type and power type is most suitable for your application. A supplier should be able to provide you with a product which suits your application needs. This will mean a site survey by the supplier, a service unavailable from companies/individuals who are entirely reliant on the internet to sell their products.

‘Refurbished’? What does that mean exactly?
“Dependant on how old the truck is, and the type of application it’s been used in, will obviously have an impact on the amount of refurbishment that is required. However, some companies will use a system whereby a minimum level of refurbishment is completed as standard, with additional levels available as required by your needs. A supplier should be able to clearly state what has been done exactly to the truck - which should be more than a quick coat of paint.

“Always ask to see the truck’s current LOLER certificate (sometimes called a ‘thorough examination’– it is a legal requirement for every truck). However the LOLER certificate is like an MOT for your car, this certificate does not check for all potential problems, and some areas like the engine are completely uninspected, but it is a vital basic check for key safety areas like mast and lift chain condition.

Buying through a third party and buying on-line as, opposed to purchasing direct from the manufacturer, can mean you will have little if no knowledge of the truck’s history.

How old is too old?
“Just like buying a car, buying one with a full service history ensures it will be more reliable as it has been maintained correctly. A full service history will not only confirm the truck’s age, but will also confirm the number of hours the truck has worked. The hour meter on a forklift truck (like the odometer on a car) tracks the use of the truck.

“The hour meter can be checked, but as with cars, these can be tampered with, so is not a guaranteed measure and therefore it is vital that you obtain a full service history with the truck.

“Buying through a third party, and buying on-line as opposed to purchasing direct from the manufacturer, can mean you will have little if no knowledge of the truck’s history and also how many times it has changed hands.

Is it legal?
“A truck serial number can reveal a trucks true identity. This can be checked direct with the manufacturer and will confirm whether the truck is with its rightful owner.

“Ensure the truck has a genuine CE mark which shows it’s been approved for European use. With a growing number of ‘rogue imports’ on the market – without the CE mark – you could be stuck with a truck you can’t sell, get parts for or, in the event of an accident, could even invalidate your insurance.

“If you are in any doubt about a truck’s condition ask the manufacturer to inspect the machine on your behalf. After all the manufacturer of the equipment has the expertise and knowledge to tell you if the condition of the machine is in line with what is being advertised.

Conclusion
“If you are buying a used forklift do not be forced into to making a decision on a piece of equipment you have not seen tested or had inspected. Especially when bidding on-line there is a tendency to get swept up in the whole bidding process by concentrating on winning the bid and forgetting what you were actually after in the first place - a reliable and cost effective forklift truck. Forklift trucks are not commodities and invariably a business will be heavily dependent on the reliability and performance of the machine to ensure that their operation runs to the best of its capabilities.

How can Linde help?

Jason Burrows, from BMB Removals spent a lot of time looking at used and refurbished fork trucks on various internet sites before calling Linde Material Handling (UK) for some professional guidance.

BMB Removals are a leading removal company based in Northampton which provide removal and storage services for domestic and commercial customers.

The application at BMB Removals required a reach truck in a very low utilisation application moving storage boxes in a warehouse.

Jason commented “I only required a truck for very limited use, so a used machine made sense. The price I paid was competitive and as I have purchased from a reputable company I get great back up and peace of mind.”

Mark Sullivan, Head of Used and Short Term Rental at Linde Material Handling (UK) commented: “For applications such as these, a Linde Approved truck offers an excellent cost effective solution.”

Linde Approved used trucks make the costs stack up

When Michael Parker, Engineering & Facilities Manager from Alstons Upholstery Ltd needed to replace his 5 tonne fork lift truck that had reached the end of its useful life, he researched the market for not only new, but also second hand trucks, taking into account several criteria. “A truck of the right capacity was just one element of the purchasing decision,” said Michael “I looked at many criteria from service response to truck design. I needed a truck suitable for the application that was reliable and cost effective with the service backup should things go wrong”.

Alstons Upholstery Ltd is an award winning family-run business based in Colchester and one of the leading upholstery manufacturers in the UK. Established in 1951, Alstons have gained an enviable reputation for manufacturing Great British Furniture, with guaranteed deliveries and a top quality back up service.

Linde Approved used trucks offer an excellent cost effective alternative to the investment in a new model. Linde provides cost effective handling solution for Otley Brewing Company with quality used trucks

“Linde came recommended to us and since investing in an E14 electric truck we’ve not looked back. The vehicle meets the needs of the business by helping to load products on and off our delivery vans and is also compact enough to work within the confines of the brewery. We’ve been very happy with our E14 Linde forklift which is cost and energy efficient and it has certainly helped us to work smarter.”
Matthew Otley, Head Brewer, Otley Brewing Company

Linde Material Handling supplied Otley with a Linde-approved E14 electric forklift truck, complete with new battery to help the company manoeuvre heavy and bulky ingredients for brewing as well as its bottled and cask ales.

As a small, family-run business, the truck provides a cost-effective means to a quality truck guaranteed by the Linde name that is reliable and meets its specific needs.

The brewery, based in Pontypridd, south Wales, supplies its craft beers to a number of pubs, independent shops, hotels and restaurants across south Wales and the south of England. It employs seven staff in total and produces between 1,800 – 2,200 gallons of beer each week which equals about 20-30 pallets.

Steve Brown, Sales Account Manager at Linde Severnside Ltd, explains: “Otley got in touch with us back in December 2010 on recommendation from one of its employees. At the time the company was growing rapidly and experiencing a surge in customer orders so it was looking for a truck that could help staff load pallets of bottles and casks quickly and easily to and from the delivery van.

“Otley also needed a truck to help transport equipment and ingredients into the brewery that was suitable to work in a confined space, under a low mezzanine floor as well as handle loads inside and outside the unit.

“Before Otley purchased the truck, this work was all previously done by hand, requiring a lot of time and energy, or a forklift was borrowed from another company. As the company was growing, this method was not sustainable so Matthew decided it was time to invest in a refurbished E14 Linde truck.”

Linde supplied Otley Brewing Company with an electric E14 forklift truck which is energy-efficient and safe, offering optimum operator comfort and precise load handling.

Linde sourced and delivered the exact used trucks which Woollards needed

When Woollards Builders Merchants needed to source a used truck with a quite unusual specification, it found that Linde Material Handling could deliver exactly what it needed.

Woollards Builder Merchants, a family business operating in Suffolk since 1947, made the strategic decision to invest in its warehousing and showroom premises in order to broaden its customer base.

The investments included the purchase of two side loaders and Ian Woollard, a partner in the business, had no hesitation in approaching Linde Material Handling.

“We have had Linde products before and we know that the on-going service is excellent. We have never had a bad engineer. Both personally and professionally, they are top class.”

The budget meant that Woollards was looking for second-hand rather than new equipment, but they did have a specific requirement that meant they could not buy a standard side-loader.

This was not a problem for Linde as it is happy to meet customer-specific requirements even on secondhand vehicles if it is not able to find the exact equipment within its extensive range of used trucks.

Linde’s staff sourced the freelift masts which needed to be fitted to the two side loaders which Woollards had identified and delivered the products.

Mr Woollard says: “The two forklifts were delivered in a superb Linde vehicle – it could have been delivering a Rolls-Royce! It is obvious that customers buying used trucks are treated just as well as those buying new products. Dealing with Linde has been an ideal buying experience.”

Mark Sullivan, Head of Used Trucks and Short Term Rental, says Linde has been running the Linde Approved standard since 2004 to ensure that the high quality which the company is famous for, is just as evident in used as in new products.

Linde Approved offers three classes of refurbishment – 3, 4, and 5 star, and this along with its national used database, ensures that Linde can meet the needs of its customers by selecting the product most suited to their particular needs.

“We believe we offer the most cost-effective solution to customers where a Used truck is right for their application and use,” explains Mr Sullivan. “Our engineers are factory trained and the products have been maintained to the highest standards throughout the term of the lease, so the used trucks are highly reliable.”

The Linde engineers also service the used products, further helping to keep them reliable and ensuring the highest productivity is maintained for the maximum time.

Mr Sullivan says that although price is obviously an important element in the purchaser’s decision-making process, the on-going service and spare parts provision is equally important. “In the end, the people and the service are the real differentiators for most customers, as Mr Woollard shows.”
