Approved Used Fork Lifts - Case Studies

Linde Approved used trucks make the costs stack up

When Michael Parker, Engineering & Facilities Manager from Alstons Upholstery Ltd needed to replace his 5 tonne fork lift truck that had reached the end of its useful life, he researched the market for not only new, but also second hand trucks, taking into account several criteria. “A truck of the right capacity was just one element of the purchasing decision,” said Michael “I looked at many criteria from service response to truck design. I needed a truck suitable for the application that was reliable and cost effective with the service backup should things go wrong”.

Alstons Upholstery Ltd is an award winning family-run business based in Colchester and one of the leading upholstery manufacturers in the UK. Established in 1951, Alstons have gained an enviable reputation for manufacturing Great British Furniture, with guaranteed deliveries and a top quality back up service.

“Once I’d stacked up all the costs, buying an Approved Used truck from Linde made the most sense” commented Michael “Seeing the trucks refurbished to such a high standard means that they end up just like new and a more cost effective solution for us”.

Linde Approved used trucks offer an excellent cost effective alternative to the investment in a new model. Typically ex-contract hire, all Linde Approved trucks have been maintained from new by Linde’s national network companies and their 23 fully equipped support centres nationwide. Linde Approved trucks are prepared to three levels which are designed to suit individual budgets and applications. Only genuine Linde parts are fitted during the refurbishment process and LOLER/PUWER certification is provided with every machine.

Whilst the truck was being prepared to Linde’s Approved standard, Linde supplied Alstons with a truck of exactly the same specification from their extensive Forklift Truck Hire fleet of over 10,000 trucks to keep things moving at Altons.

The Linde Approved used engine powered H 50 D with a capacity of 5 tonnes is now at work at Alstons moving in the region of 50 tonnes of timber and fabric a day. Unloading lorries and moving timber stacks, the compactness of this large capacity truck in combination with the excellent visibility for the operator is proving ideal for working in the confined space of the yard.

The Linde H 50 is fitted with the renowned Linde hydrostatic transmission which requires no differential, no conventional service brake and no clutch. With a reduced level of moving parts, there is a reduced level of maintenance costs incurred making this range ideal for use in busy applications like this.

“Our area representative, Rob Cramsie at Linde Material Handling East was really on the ball,” Michael continued “All my questions were dealt with quickly and his professional approach made the buying process that much easier.”

Linde provides cost effective handling solution for Otley Brewing Company with quality used trucks

“Linde came recommended to us and since investing in an E14 electric truck we’ve not looked back. The vehicle meets the needs of the business by helping to load products on and off our delivery vans and is also compact enough to work within the confines of the brewery. We’ve been very happy with our E14 Linde forklift which is cost and energy efficient and it has certainly helped us to work smarter.”
Matthew Otley, Head Brewer, Otley Brewing Company

Linde Material Handling supplied Otley with a Linde-approved E14 electric forklift truck, complete with new battery to help the company manoeuvre heavy and bulky ingredients for brewing as well as its bottled and cask ales.

As a small, family-run business, the truck provides a cost-effective means to a quality truck guaranteed by the Linde name that is reliable and meets its specific needs.

The brewery, based in Pontypridd, south Wales, supplies its craft beers to a number of pubs, independent shops, hotels and restaurants across south Wales and the south of England. It employs seven staff in total and produces between 1,800 – 2,200 gallons of beer each week which equals about 20-30 pallets.

Steve Brown, Sales Account Manager at Linde Severnside Ltd, explains: “Otley got in touch with us back in December 2010 on recommendation from one of its employees. At the time the company was growing rapidly and experiencing a surge in customer orders so it was looking for a truck that could help staff load pallets of bottles and casks quickly and easily to and from the delivery van.

“Otley also needed a truck to help transport equipment and ingredients into the brewery that was suitable to work in a confined space, under a low mezzanine floor as well as handle loads inside and outside the unit.

“Before Otley purchased the truck, this work was all previously done by hand, requiring a lot of time and energy, or a forklift was borrowed from another company. As the company was growing, this method was not sustainable so Matthew decided it was time to invest in a refurbished E14 Linde truck.”

Linde supplied Otley Brewing Company with an electric E14 forklift truck which is energy-efficient and safe, offering optimum operator comfort and precise load handling.

Linde sourced and delivered the exact used trucks which Woollards needed

When Woollards Builders Merchants needed to source a used truck with a quite unusual specification, it found that Linde Material Handling could deliver exactly what it needed.

Woollards Builder Merchants, a family business operating in Suffolk since 1947, made the strategic decision to invest in its warehousing and showroom premises in order to broaden its customer base.

The investments included the purchase of two side loaders and Ian Woollard, a partner in the business, had no hesitation in approaching Linde Material Handling.

“We have had Linde products before and we know that the on-going service is excellent. We have never had a bad engineer. Both personally and professionally, they are top class.”

The budget meant that Woollards was looking for second-hand rather than new equipment, but they did have a specific requirement that meant they could not buy a standard side-loader.

This was not a problem for Linde as it is happy to meet customer-specific requirements even on secondhand vehicles if it is not able to find the exact equipment within its extensive range of used trucks.

Linde’s staff sourced the freelift masts which needed to be fitted to the two side loaders which Woollards had identified and delivered the products.

Mr Woollard says: “The two forklifts were delivered in a superb Linde vehicle – it could have been delivering a Rolls-Royce! It is obvious that customers buying used trucks are treated just as well as those buying new products. Dealing with Linde has been an ideal buying experience.”

Mark Sullivan, Head of Used Trucks and Short Term Rental, says Linde has been running the Linde Approved standard since 2004 to ensure that the high quality which the company is famous for, is just as evident in used as in new products.

Linde Approved offers three classes of refurbishment – 3, 4, and 5 star, and this along with its national used database, ensures that Linde can meet the needs of its customers by selecting the product most suited to their particular needs.

“We believe we offer the most cost-effective solution to customers where a Used truck is right for their application and use,” explains Mr Sullivan. “Our engineers are factory trained and the products have been maintained to the highest standards throughout the term of the lease, so the used trucks are highly reliable.”

The Linde engineers also service the used products, further helping to keep them reliable and ensuring the highest productivity is maintained for the maximum time.

Mr Sullivan says that although price is obviously an important element in the purchaser’s decision-making process, the on-going service and spare parts provision is equally important. “In the end, the people and the service are the real differentiators for most customers, as Mr Woollard shows.”
